About
Dr Sherilene Carr
I am a psychologist and psychotherapist working with people who have experienced significant life-stressors and trauma. These experiences often develop into symptoms of depression and anxiety and difficulties with self-identity. My approach is to sit alongside you as you explore how these stressful life events have impacted you, your relationships with others, and your opportunities. My first priority is to develop a strong therapeutic alliance with you, grounded in respect and authenticity, to enable you to feel safe in the process. My goal is to guide and support you as you process what has happened to you and how you can move towards a future of good mental health and wellbeing. My cat Missy sometimes assists.
I am trained in several evidence-based treatment modalities, including:
-
EMDR
-
Schema Therapy
-
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
-
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
-
Motivational Interviewing

My background includes the completion of a PhD in psychology, researching the effect of emotion on memory, and I have worked in a number of settings, including academia, public service and the criminal justice system.

Services
I am an Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) accredited consultant providing trauma-informed psychological therapy in individual and group settings.

Individual
Individual therapy is provided on a weekly or fortnightly basis. With an EMDR approach, I will work with you on resolving the disturbances of stressful life experiences. I use a Schema Therapy approach as an adjunct to my EMDR work.

Groups
Group work is provided to reduce the disturbance of recent traumatic events. I follow the Group Traumatic Episode Protocol (G-TEP) which is an intensive program of up to five 2-hour sessions over two weeks. No traumatic details are shared in this group setting (known as 'blind to therapist').
